I just returned from an intense week long class in Eugene
Oregon. I felt euphoric after completing it and at the same time worried about
returning to my regular routines and life – wondering if I could maintain these
new lessons in the midst of the normal chaos that is life with a husband, kids,
friends, school, exercise, volunteering and jurnee.

This past year has been a significant one. My Dad died in
February and while it was not a complete surprise since he had had Non-Hodgkin’s
lymphoma for 12 years – the speed with which he declined shocked all of us. When
he died, I felt as though the rug had been wrenched out from under me. I felt
stuck and sad and unsure of what to do. And I was angry. My interest in jurnee
waned. We had done so much work and designed beautiful products and a great new
website, but no one was buying. I did not feel secure enough to go out and sell.
It seemed like visualizing our success and believing jurnee would work were not
enough. I had prayed and prayed that my Dad would live. I believed his positive
attitude had kept him alive and fighting all these years and that it would keep
him alive until a very old age. I could not accept that this had not been enough.

I have done many things to help me grieve. I have found that
focusing on learning new things provides amazing respite. I learned to row. I
ran my first road race. I am training for a half marathon to benefit Leukemia
and Lymphoma. I am not a religious
person per say, but I do believe my Dad is with me and some magical things have
occurred around that. I still miss his physical presence. It is like an ache. I
remember his hugs and his hands. I have phone messages that he left me. I miss
talking to him.

One of the things I learned in my class is the power of
intention and visualizing. And the courage it takes to listen to your heart and
mind, to follow your dreams. So I am back. To put commitment and strength and
courage and love in my life and in jurnee and see where we take each other.

Interactive Green Lifestyle Event Debuts to Share Tips and Tricks to Going Green

Eco-Chic Expo: an interactive green lifestyle event launches May 1st to prove that going green is more stylish and easier than some think. Showcasing more than 15 local companies in every lifestyle category, Eco-Chic Expo exhibitors will entertain and educate guests of this free event about how to live more sustainably. The latest harvest from three local, eco-friendly companies – Tread Light Gifts, mamaswap.com and Satsuma Designs - the Eco-Chic Expo will be held Saturday, May 1st at the Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center from 10a-2p.

“Going green isn’t all about having a chicken coop and composting, although those are great ways to live sustainably! We want to share with our community that a greener life can be easy, fun, even fashionable,” quips Tracy Anderson, Eco-Chic Co-founder and CEO of Tread Light Gifts. Among other demonstrations and interactive how-tos, guests can learn how to create a landscape to feed a family, make organic paper for writing and wrapping, mix up non-toxic, all natural cleaning products, enjoy natural spa treatments and complimentary brow and lip sugaring, design green interior spaces, fashion organic clothing and jewelry, swap gently used kids clothing and gear, and enjoy an Eco-Chic Expo exclusive, a Dante Inferno’s Eco-Dog!

I dropped off my youngest daughter at preschool at 9 am, then took my first grade daughter to school, where I stayed to volunteer and listen to other first graders reading, stumbling through sentences that are just past their comfort points.

After volunteering at the school I went back to my house, where I met my business partner Darcy to begin work for the day. We sit at my dining room table with our laptops in between us, each intermittently typing and then talking. We are checking emails and talking about what our agenda is for day. Today we want to write a blog entry, and we need to follow up on those cloth tags. We are making phone calls to business suppliers and checking on orders and talking about summer plans and editing our website. We drink copious amounts of tea, and somehow I get very hungry just sitting at my table, working away. Sweets never tasted better than in front of my laptop.

We are on the brink of launching our yoga and meditation kits. It is thrilling to see a vision come to reality! And do we ever need these kits ourselves! With elementary and school age kids, work, husbands, preschool co-op meetings, lectures to become better parents, and exercise – it all can get exhausting and make us unbalanced! And I go on meditation cycles…weeks of being great about taking time each day to meditate followed by weeks of no meditating, getting myself to the point of being so un-centered that I remind myself to meditate again. Until I start the cycle all over. Thank goodness I work for a company that is all about being compassionate with ourselves.
